5 Excellent Reasons for Wearing a Helmet when bicycling

Below we’re going to discuss a few reasons for wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle.

I used to think differently; I always thought looking cooler was better than being safe.

Yeah, I was once young and very unwise, just like most of us.

At the same time, I never knew that almost 1,000 cyclists die and over 100k get injured every year.

The statistics are alarming, and it makes me want to get into this list immediately.

Reasons for Wearing a Helmet When Cycling

wearing a helmet

As fun as riding your bike, and motorcycle is; the safe way to do it is with a helmet.

Looking cool and getting out to enjoy life is one thing, but you don’t want to regret anything later.

Life is as precious as you treat it, so grab that dome protector and enjoy riding responsibly.

And, if you don’t think safety is enough, here are other reasons to wear a helmet when cycling.

1. Helmets Save Lives

When you think of wearing a helmet and safety, you think of motorcycles and how important a helmet is.

When it comes to bicycles, most don’t think it’s necessary.

Seems a bit weird, but that’s how some tend to think.

I mean, you’re not going as fast, and you don’t have to worry so much about other people getting in your way.

However, cycling is one sport where wearing a helmet should be considered.

If the statistics mentioned earlier don’t make you feel you need one, think again.

Helmets have saved more lives than you think, and, yes, they are . . .

2. Helmets Are Stylish

Bike helmets are already necessary.

Why not make it look good?

If you’re like me and you don’t like helmets, now is a great time to embrace it.

You’re going to use it regardless, so get something you like.

Preferably something that matches your dome.

There are so many different styles to choose from, so don’t think that you need to settle for the ones you see at Walmart.

3. They are useful tools

You can buy a rain cap for a helmet to keep your head dry when it rains. I have a helmet that has removable ear flaps for cold-weather riding.

Many of the helmets today come with flashing lights on the back or brackets to mount lights. This is extremely handy if you commute on busy streets to work to the grocer.

Many of the models have a sun visor on them to help protect your face & eyes from the rays of the sun.

4. Helmets Prevent Brain Damage

Your brain is a very sensitive part of your body, and it controls some very important things.

It happens too often that someone falls, or gets into what seems like a minor accident, just to have their brain damaged.

Your whole life can change in the blink of an eye, and something so simple as a helmet could’ve prevented it.

I know it sounds scary, but you should treat it as the serious matter that it is.

5. Helmets Can Make You More Visible

We can and should try to make ourselves as visible as we can to others, regardless of where we are riding.

If you cycle to work or do a lot of road riding, you know how important reflectors and other bright things are.

I know a lot of people like myself are cool with a simple black helmet, but if you’re on the streets a lot, you might want to consider something a little brighter.

Get a bright-colored helmet and one that comes with some reflector tape.

Mine’s black but it does have some reflective stuff on it, so it’s great for being noticed.

How to Pick a Helmet

When deciding on a bike helmet, we tend to go with what is sold at our favorite stores.

That’s completely fine, but don’t think that that’s all there is out there.

There are seriously all kinds of helmets that you have never heard of.

I’ve got this cool Fox helmet, and although it wasn’t cheap, it at least looks good.

At least that’s what I think.

We all have different tastes and styles, so go with whatever you like.

Just don’t feel that there’s a one-size suits all helmet out there.

Other Protective Gear

I know we’re on the topic of wearing a helmet while cycling, but please don’t forget the other parts of your personal protective equipment.

Your PPE will keep things safe and it will make your adventure that much more enjoyable.

Everyone is using PPE, so don’t feel that you’re going to be the odd one out.

It’s a great hobby for men and women, regardless of age.

For starters, just make sure you’re wearing shoes that are suitable for biking.

If you have laces, tuck them in so they don’t get caught on anything.

And, FYI, jeans and a bike are a bad combination.

Gloves are always great and some protective eyewear will always help with bugs and the elements.

Conclusion – Wear a Helmet When Cycling

There are many reasons why need to wear a helmet and not many reasons you shouldn’t.

The benefits are obvious and why I won’t ever leave home without one.

My kids all have their helmets and they all like different styles as well.

We all know that cycling is one of the better activities for kids, but remember that their safety should always come first.

And, as an adult, you should always set that example.

Kids already don’t play outside that much, so get them out there and enjoy the great outdoors with them.
