As a parent of children and young grandchildren, I love getting outside and enjoying all this lovely Orb has to offer.
However, we do have our challenges dealing with the digital world.
Those young eyes become transfixed on those screens and boy is it hard to get them to break free.
Rather than being so extreme and cutting out technology like a crazy person, I embrace it and use it to my advantage.
I like to get the young folks looking for somewhere to go in the wilds outside beyond the screen. Let them think it was their idea. This does require some effort and understanding, but the benefits are beyond worth it.
Maybe you struggle to get out and get away from that screen sometimes. You wouldn’t be the only one. I’ve been there too.
So, if you are struggling with getting in shape, dealing with devices and technology, or flat-out getting off your butt to do something outside, I want to let you know that you are not alone.
Everyone struggles at one point in their life and that’s okay. We’re only human. It’s the getting back up part that counts, regardless of what situation you are in.
Make a schedule and stick to it. Start small. Put a walk on your schedule for one week. Slowly build up to a couple of evenings walking and then maybe a hike in the country.
Keep building until the burning desire to be out there in nature takes hold. Believe me, it will.
Before you know it you’ll find yourself ordering new hiking boots. Then you’ll be off and running.
Get Up and Outside
There comes a point in life when we become comfortable with a sedentary lifestyle. You’ll want to kick yourself for it. I know I have!
I got lazy, got complacent, and turning that corner was difficult to do, at different times. But I’ve done it.
So can you!
So, if you are in this boat, know that getting up is not going to be easy, but it can and should be done.
The trick?
Schedule it, and just do it.
Whether you like it or not, get up and think of what it is that you are going to do.
Where can you go?
Call an old buddy you used to hike with. They’re probably wondering what happened to you anyway.
Get Out
This is the fun part.
Once you get up, you can now get out and figure out what it is that you want to do.
If you have a bike, hop on it and see where the road takes you. When you get on it, it will feel like you rode it yesterday. This feeling amazes me every spring.
If you are still in lazy mode, drive to a park, the beach, or whatever natural landmark you have in your area.
Go for a walk, bag a lunch, and eat at a park or beachfront oasis.
Enjoy Life
Life is too short to just vegetate somewhere in a dark room. We were meant to get out and live in the sun, wind, rain, and yes, the cold. It keeps our blood pumping and our thoughts fresh.
Remember, it is always better to enjoy the out-of-doors with a friend. It’s a way of building memories common to both of you. Gives you common thoughts to share with others.
There is nothing like feeling a brisk cold breeze on your face as you peddle a bicycle into the wind.
Feeling your thighs burn from the miles you’ve put behind you. Feel those fingers grip that cold handlebar as you anticipate that hot cup of chocolate waiting for you at the end of a long ride late in the fall.
Let’s do it!
